Accuro is proud to support the Anthony Nolan Trust
29 February 2008Accuro, the digital transcription arm of Premex Group is proud to support the Anthony Nolan Trust in their Ruthin Castle Fright Night Challenge. In 1277 Ruthin Castle was built on a red sandstone ridge 100 feet above the Clwyd Valley, and contains years of history within its walls.
Ruthin Castle is haunted by many ghosts including Lady Grey. After finding out about the infidelity of her husband with a local peasant women, Lady Grey killed her and was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to death. She can be seen wandering the castles battlements and in the Banquet Hall. Another haunt of the castle is the ghostly figure of a soldier in armour wearing only one gauntlet. There is a strange glowing ball of light that has been seen at the castle known as an orb. These orbs are believed to be the soul of the dead which contain the intelligence, emotions and personality of human beings.
The challenge is to spend the night in the foreboding atmosphere of the castle keeping vigil for any paranormal activity. Spiritualist mediums will commentate on any spirit energies that are encountered. There will also be an experienced guide on hand, as well as activities throughout the night. The Anthony Nolan Trust owes its existence to the incredible vision and determination of one woman – Shirley Nolan. When Anthony was born, in 1971, with the extremely rare Wiscott Aldrich Syndrome, the only known cure was a bone marrow transplant from a compatible donor. The question – how to find that donor?
In 1971, there was no such thing as a bone marrow register. There were no mechanisms to analyse or record the variations in each person’s cell tissue which determine whether he or she could be a match. So Shirley directed her energy towards establishing a register. She started working to create a system – a system which would analyse a person’s tissue type, record it in accessible form - and keep the details of each person, one by one, who declared themselves willing to donate bone marrow tissue in the event of a match. Sadly, Anthony died in 1979 without a donor being found.
Thanks to Shirley’s vision, the Anthony Nolan Trust now operates one of the largest register of donors in the world. As a direct result of that same vision, the World Marrow Donors Association now offers access to over 11 million donors worldwide. As I am sure you will agree, a very worthwhile cause to get spooked out over!
